So the Rio de Oro near Roca Partida, Veracruz, Mexico is an instant classic. Clean, blue water, basalt gorges, and clean waterfalls are the name of the game and Dooley, Jim, and Eli came to figure out what it was all about.
We picked up our driver, Arturo, in Roca Partida and headed up through the cow fields towards the put in. Once reaching the end of the road, if you can make it there through the maze of gates and mudholes, it’s about a 15 minute hike to get to the river. The scenery of this place is incredible, walking through rolling green pastures with the Gulf of Mexico behind your back. The put in is at the base of a 50′ waterfall, and the river is sapphire blue and crystal clear. Tropical paradise.
The nature of this run is some mellow, class III rapids, leading into a basalt mini-gorge with some sticky sloper holes, culminating in a mega-gorge with a large entrance falls and a large exit falls with a couple rapids in between. After exiting the gorge, you paddle another mile to the ocean, where you proceed to get out of your boat and walk up the beach to Fernando’s for some fresh shrimp and fish tacos caught that day. Unbelievable. Here’s some photo’s:
